Resource Management and Space

Resource management is comprised of a set of practices pertaining to the maintenance of a natural system's integrity. Examples of this form of management are air resource management, soil conservation, forestry, wildlife management and water source management. Recycling is an emerging resource management tool and involves the reprocessing of used and abandoned materials into new products.

The use of space resources is likely to contribute positively to resource management to mitigate the damage caused to Earth's environment by industrial and energy production processes. Off-Earth reuse and recycling of available material and structures (e.g., a space shuttle's external fuel tank) is currently being evaluated both technically and commercially.
