Telecommunications and Space

Telecommunications involve the transmission of information, including data, text, pictures, voice and video over long distance and typically through wireless means.

Telecommunications represents one of the business sectors most clearly affected by the contribution of space technologies. Apart from direct telecommunications (e.g., radio, telephone, TV, and so on), telecommunications is also involved in delivering many combined services (e.g. geo-positioning and navigation, etc.) and contribute significantly to day-to-day terrestrial activities.

There is a steady increase in the number of TV and radio broadcasting service thematic bouquets, now providing access to essential services such as distance learning and telemedicine for the entire population.

The existing telephony service using geostationary satellite systems is moving towards new multimedia services. These will enable users to obtain direct access to high rates, and provide high volume, bidirectional mode links.

Mobile services, which started with regional coverage geostationary satellites, are now reaching out to world coverage using low orbit satellite constellations.
